SafetyInformation
Taking to the open water is much like getting involved in any other sport whether it be climbing, mountain biking or skiing. There are risks associated with it but the risks are manageable. Like anything in the great outdoors, wild swimming is only reckless if undertaken recklessly.
Before taking a dip ask yourself the following:
- Is the water safe and clean? Check the web and the Environment Agency website for info on your chosen swim spot, they give ratings on stretches of water and have loads of other useful info too.
- Where can I swim? Check out our Facebook page, the Outdoor Swimming Society website, speak to your local swim and tri clubs, ask around your local area or buy the book Wild Swim by Kate Rew.
- Am I safe? This where common sense prevails; wear a brightly coloured swim cap, not blue or black, wear a wetsuit for buoyancy and warmth, don’t swim alone swim with friends or meet people through our Facebook page, always tell someone your plans, make sure you’re a strong enough swimmer for the challenge, consider boat cover especially when covering greater distances, always check for tides and currents, watch out for other water craft and pesky fisherman with lines out… oh and above all have fun…
